The next morning came, and Nick strolled into the galley for cereal and juice. He looked refreshed, and he was. Nobody was looking at him, but they all had a smile hidden behind their cups or glasses. Nick finally saw it.

“What’s going on?” he asked.

Wizzy’s avatar literally popped into the galley. And before anybody could stop him, he spat out his news. “Oh, it is wonderful. I couldn’t be happier. We have our own Furlong shuttle to experiment with. Just think of the technology I, I mean we, can extract.” He looked exuberant. That couldn’t be said for the rest of the crew. They had planned to surprise their captain, and Wizzy spoiled it.

“Thanks for nothing, Wizzy,” Amini said, not turning her head or making eye contact with the AI.

“What? What is wrong? Did I say something I shouldn’t have?” His gaze flashed back and forth between all the seated crew. None would make eye contact with him.

“What’s this all about?” Nick finally asked.

Amini slowly turned in Nick’s direction. “It was going to be a surprise until some blundering AI spoiled it. While you were resting comfortably last night, we emptied site eighteen, and then Tiana and Sif went to nineteen. You can guess what they found, thanks to Mr. Blabber Mouth. It is a Furlong shuttle, and it now rests in the main cargo bay.”

“That was at site nineteen?” Nick asked, still amazed.

“Yes,” Tiana answered. “Amini flew down in Falcon and leaped it and the shuttle out to the new alpha grid. When Sif and I got back, we leaped to the open spot in the grid. We transferred the new shuttle to Argos and then came back here, slowly and quietly. All while you were, um, resting.”

Nick turned to Doc and looked at his friend with suspicion, then ignored the temptation to dig into this “resting” thing more. Doc just shrugged and smiled.

“Where is Ilton?” Nick asked, not seeing him with the breakfast group.

“Oh, he is climbing all over the new shuttle,” Amini said with a smile. “He won’t eat or talk with anybody right now.”

“All right,” Nick responded, “let him have his fun. He doesn’t have to go with us tonight. We’re not using a switch. Let’s plan on taking Enterprise again. Similar loadout of goodies for Trond as last time. Maybe a few more weapons we can hand out if all goes well.” Then he had an idea for something special for Trond. “Wizzy,” he called out.

No response.

“Wizzy, you are needed now in the galley,” Nick called out louder than before. It was overkill since relative loudness would be lost on an AI who could hear anything at any volume on the ship.

The AI’s avatar appeared. “What now? Aren’t you aware Ilton and I are meticulously going over the Furlong shuttle?”

“I am aware. But what I have for you is more important than that for now.”

Wizzy’s eyes got bigger with the expectation of something better than an alien shuttle. “Oh, goody. What is it?”

“I need you to build a box and paint it red.
